Coltrane-Style Lick for Plectrum Banjo

Above, you will find a link to a .PDF of a banjo exercise featuring one of John Coltrane’s most famous licks; this lick is featured on tunes such as “Giant Steps,” “Countdown,” and many, many more. However, this passage became an ear worm for me, listening to this version of Buddy Wachter performing the 1926 classic “‘Deed I Do” - you’ll hear the lick right around the :50 mark.
I’ve intentionally left out chord symbols, and music theory. I’d like for this first .PDF to serve as material to stretch out the ears of the typical plectrum banjoist, and to, hopefully, inspire you to travel just a bit further down the rabbit hole with me.
If you’re ready to dive in a bit further, and wish to discuss some of the nuances of this passage. Please feel free to leave a comment below, or shoot me an email at:
As always, the information and materials are completely free fo charge, however, if you’re feeling generous please feel free to send a donation via PayPal to the email address listed above.
Thanks so much for reading, and happy picking!
